Ellen Devall
about the artist:
In 2010 Ellen completed a BA (hons) degree, specialising in Fashion & Textiles; however her work is neither fashion nor textiles, although elements of dress appear as she is interested in the link between clothing, the wearer and identity.
In reusing very old fabrics….some as old as 100 years, Ellen thinks of all the hands that might have touched them or worn them and the lives lived in those times past.
Elements of fact and fiction combine, weaving a new story and creating a visual narrative which allows the viewer to complete it by drawing their own conclusion as to the ending.

about the art work:
Florence and Mehitabelle
My artwork always starts with a story or poem as the written word is important to me. There is usually an historical background to the work which also involves experiences from my own life and that of women throughout time. I use only very old fabrics yarns and paper …either from ledgers or old books, to make artefacts which carry message and meaning.
Florence’s box has been made in conjunction with an original short story I have written. The story is set in the late 18th century and each of the nine artefacts reference Florence’s desire to create something of beauty. Mehitabelle, her little black cat was her constant companion and friend… but she may have been very much more than that.
